Tenggarong is the capital city of Kutai Kartanegara. The city is also knows as the ‘King’s city’, being the administrative center and residence of the Sultan since 1782. The city has a rich cultural heritage related to the Hindu Kingdom, the Sultanate’s palace, tombs of the Kutai Kings.

An inspiring Dayak experience centre is located in the centre of the city on the island in the Mahakam river. It is built around a traditional Dayak longhouse, where you can learn Dayak culture and history first hand from Dayak story tellers. You can also engage in traditional Dayak activities. Develop your talent as a Dayak dancer, up your hunting skills with a traditional blowpipe and learn the details about Dayak tattoos.

In the vicinity of Tenggarong, you can visit an original Dayak village and live like a Dayak. Submerge in Dayak culture, join the native people of Borneo in their daily activities like fishing and hunting.

Tenggarong is also the hub for wildlife and adventure activities further upstream the Mahakam river. The city is very well accessible by road. A drive from Balikpapan through the Borneo jungle on the paved road takes about 3.5 hours.
